Banksy, the street artist

Banksy is a England-based graffiti artist, political activist, film director, and painter. His satirical form of street art and subversive epigrams combine irreverent dark humor with graffiti done in a distinctive stenciling technique. His form of art is something I really like.

“On 21 February 2007, Sotheby’s auction house in London auctioned three works, reaching the highest ever price for a Banksy work at auction: over £102,000 for his Bombing Middle England. Two of his other graffiti works, Balloon Girl and Bomb Hugger, sold for £37,200 and £31,200 respectively, which were well above their estimated prices.^[32] The following day’s auction saw a further three Banksy works reach soaring prices: Ballerina with Action Man Parts reached £96,000; Glory sold for £72,000; Untitled (2004) sold for £33,600; all significantly above estimated values.^[33] To coincide with the second day of auctions, Banksy updated his website with a new image of an auction house scene showing people bidding on a picture that said, “I Can’t Believe You Morons Actually Buy This Shit.” ” —Sourced from Wikipedia.

London-based designer Sophie de Oliveira Barata creates some of the most jaw-droppingly awesome prosthetics we’ve ever seen.

Sophie comes from an art background, with a first class honours degree at London Arts University where she studied Special Effects prosthetics for film and T.V. She then went on to work for 8 years, as a sculptor making realistic looking, bespoke prosthetics for amputees at one of the leading prosthetic providers. She worked in all areas sculpting fingers, toes, partial feet , partial hands, bespoke liners and leg and arm covers for amputees. In her spare time she made more experimental art work in this medium, before setting up her own studio.

Known as The Alternative Limb Project, Sophie works as a specialist consultant with other prosthetists and produces both artificial limbs that look completely realistic as well as limbs created using imaginative ideas provided by the clients themselves. “She can interpret your ideas and create a unique design that will reflect your interests and personality.”

As you can see here, Sophie’s work is truly astonishing. As well as being completely functional prostheses, these amazing limbs are also unique works of art.

Each of her designs offer a sense of individuality, allowing the customer to express their personality through their synthetic appendages. The artist says, “Having an alternative limb is about claiming control and saying ‘I’m an individual and this reflects who I am.’”

The five photographs taken by Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths from 1917-1920 in the village of Cottingley, Yorkshire, England. In 1983 the two cousins admitted that the pictures were faked using paper cutouts; Frances, however, insisted that that the final photograph, showing a group of faeries gathering in the grass, was genuine. The girls also maintained that, although the photographs might be hoaxed, they still witnessed faeries dancing at the bottom of their garden. The pictures still continue to mystify and enchant people even today.

This is a GIF of a growing tree I made for a piece of interactive art I’ve been working on.
This animation consists of 40 frames, each drawn from scratch to give it the feel of something hand drawn and as little digital as possible.

The process was quite time consuming, but rewarding, I must say!

Raw Mango Lime and Fig Cake

Ingredients

Crust

• 2 cups Pecans (about 215 g)

• 2 pinches of pink Himalayan salt

• 1 teaspoon Mesquite powder

• 1 cup dry baby Figs, put in soaking water

• 1 teaspoon Agave nectar

Crust Directions

Soak the dry Figs in water for 15 min.

Meanwhile, make a flour of the Pecans. Put in a bowl and set aside. Process the soaked Figs into a fig-paste.

Add the pecan flour and rest of the ingredients and process until you have a dough ball. Press it into a spring pan and with your hands, form a crust.

Even out the surface with a spoon.

Put in the fridge to rest while you make the filling.

Filling

• 2 ripe mangos (a ripe mango smells of nectar)

• 1 cup Cashews, dry

• a pinch of pink Himalayan salt

• zest from one organic Lime

• 5 teaspoons Lime juice

• 2.5 tablespoons virgin Coconut oil

Filling Directions

If you have a powerful blender/food processor, just put all the ingredients in and process. Otherwise, grind the Cashews into a flour in a coffee grinder or food processor, then add the mango, lime and salt. Then add the Coconut oil and process some 30 sec more. Process until completely smooth.

Pour the filling over the pie crust and put in the fridge while you make the kiwi-balls!

Cut slices of the kiwi to place on top.
